Planet migration, from torque to real timing

Resonant capture is an angle problem

A period ratio near two is easy to produce and easy to misread. A stronger test follows where conjunctions occur relative to each orbit’s periapse. This chapter builds that test from the actual integrated positions and velocities.

Keep the full gravitational problem

The star and two finite-mass planets move in an inertial frame. Each gravitational pair obeys the unsoftened inverse-square law. The initial inner orbit has semimajor axis one AU, the outer planet is twice as massive, and both start with eccentricity 0.001. Initial periapse longitudes are 0.2 and 1.2 radians; mean anomalies are zero and two radians.

A finite planetary mass enters the two-body frequency. The outer initial semimajor axis includes the finite-mass correction below. After constructing the heliocentric elements, all bodies are shifted to the barycentric position and velocity origin.

a2,0=a1,0[R02M⋆+m2M⋆+m1]1/3a_{2,0}=a_{1,0}\left[R_0^2\frac{M_\star+m_2}{M_\star+m_1}\right]^{1/3}
This fixes the declared osculating initial period ratio. Interactions make its later instantaneous value oscillate.

Write down the imposed disk acceleration

At each time, calculate a planet’s heliocentric osculating elements, then its local wave and corotation torques. The migration acceleration is parallel to the relative velocity and has a coefficient chosen to supply the desired torque about the star. A separate radial term damps eccentricity.

The radial damping term has no torque about the stellar origin. Its relative work is nonpositive. For an eccentric orbit, the velocity-parallel term is not pure semimajor-axis migration: it also affects energy and eccentricity. This is an explicitly prescribed force model, not hydrodynamics.

ad=Γmℓv−2(r⋅v)r2τer,ℓ=(r×v)z\boldsymbol a_d=\frac{\Gamma}{m\ell}\boldsymbol v-\frac{2(\boldsymbol r\cdot\boldsymbol v)}{r^2\tau_e}\boldsymbol r,\qquad \ell=(\boldsymbol r\times\boldsymbol v)_z
Relative position and velocity are measured from the star. Positive torque means prograde angular momentum is added.
τwave=h4q(Σa2/M⋆)Ω,τe=τwave0.780[1−0.14(e/h)2+0.06(e/h)3]\tau_{\rm wave}=\frac{h^4}{q(\Sigma a^2/M_\star)\Omega},\quad \tau_e=\frac{\tau_{\rm wave}}{0.780}\left[1-0.14(e/h)^2+0.06(e/h)^3\right]
The coplanar damping law is used only below the stated eccentricity limit.

Reduce the corotation term with the correct sign

Eccentric motion weakens the coherent horseshoe response. We multiply the circular corotation result by the negative exponential below, following Fendyke and Nelson. Izidoro et al. equation 9 prints a positive exponent despite describing attenuation; this implementation uses the original attenuation law.

The wave term also receives the Cresswell–Nelson eccentricity correction. The Lab stops at eccentricity greater than 0.7 local aspect ratios, well before the large-eccentricity sign changes of extrapolated formulae. It also stops outside 0.35–3 AU, above 0.2 thermal masses, below Toomre parameter twenty, or inside three mutual Hill radii.

ΓC(e)=ΓC(0)exp⁡[−e/(0.5h+0.01)]\Gamma_C(e)=\Gamma_C(0)\exp[-e/(0.5h+0.01)]
The negative exponent suppresses the corotation term as eccentricity increases.
fL(e)=1−[e/(2.02h)]41+[e/(2.25h)]1.2+[e/(2.84h)]6,ΓL(e)=fL(e)ΓL(0)f_L(e)=\frac{1-[e/(2.02h)]^4}{1+[e/(2.25h)]^{1.2}+[e/(2.84h)]^6},\qquad \Gamma_L(e)=f_L(e)\Gamma_L(0)
Only the small-eccentricity domain stated in the text is used; the formal large-eccentricity turnover is outside this Lab.

Audit the energy and angular momentum reservoir

The static disk is external to the three-body system. Its force is applied to the planets; no equal-and-opposite acceleration is secretly applied to the star. The system may therefore change energy, angular momentum and linear momentum.

For the energy audit, use every body’s inertial velocity, including the star, and all three gravitational pair potentials. Subtract the time-integrated disk work. The angular-momentum audit similarly uses inertial positions and the external torque. Using heliocentric torque alone in this full-system audit omits the moving-origin term.

dEsysdt=∑imivi,inertial⋅ad,i,dLz,sysdt=∑imi(ri,inertial×ad,i)z\frac{dE_{\rm sys}}{dt}=\sum_i m_i\boldsymbol v_{i,\rm inertial}\cdot\boldsymbol a_{d,i},\qquad \frac{dL_{z,\rm sys}}{dt}=\sum_i m_i(\boldsymbol r_{i,\rm inertial}\times\boldsymbol a_{d,i})_z
The numerical test checks the conserved residuals after subtracting these exchanges. In the no-disk limit the exchanges vanish.

Track the phase of the kicks

Mean longitude advances around an orbit; periapse longitude locates its long axis. Near the two-to-one resonance, combine them into two critical angles. Period ratio alone discards the phase information that decides whether repeated conjunctions reinforce a coherent pattern.

Unwrap each angle at fine physical time intervals before discarding samples for a compact plot. Otherwise an angle that circles an integer number of times between saved frames can look fixed. Frozen records track phase every half initial inner orbit; the default and later cases are separately checked at finer cadence. Where very small eccentricity makes periapse ill-conditioned, the chart switches to wrapped samples and gives no capture verdict.

θ1=2λ2−λ1−ϖ1,θ2=2λ2−λ1−ϖ2\theta_1=2\lambda_2-\lambda_1-\varpi_1,\qquad\theta_2=2\lambda_2-\lambda_1-\varpi_2
Bounded back-and-forth motion is libration; repeated full turns are circulation. A finite record supports a finite-window diagnosis.

Read the saved example without opening the Lab

For the default disk and four-Earth-mass outer planet, the later half of the twelve-thousand-period record has critical-angle ranges about 17.5 and 18.6 degrees wide. Both show repeated turns within those ranges. We call this temporary capture over that declared window.

The same initial state and physical parameters integrated to fifty thousand periods no longer keep those angles bounded. In its later half they each sweep about twenty-seven full turns. This is evidence for release in this model, not a verified explanation of the release mechanism. Identifying a specific overstability or resonance-overlap mechanism would require further controlled experiments.

Separate numerical agreement from physical validity

Frozen presets use REBOUND 5.2.2 IAS15 with accuracy parameter one times ten to minus ten. Custom browser runs use DOP853 with relative tolerance two times ten to minus eleven and absolute component scale one times ten to minus fourteen. An independent short-trajectory comparison checks both Cartesian phase and orbital sizes.

The public package states actual tolerances and convergence results. A numerically accurate solution of this imposed two-dimensional torque model can still miss real disk physics. The synthetic pair and the measured timing diagnostic retain their separate initial conditions and scientific roles.

Compare a temporary capture with its future

  1. Read the later half of the default angle plot.
  2. Choose Later: let go. Keep the same parameters; compare the longer time axis.
  3. Identify which plotted evidence supports release and which proposed mechanism remains untested.

Exercises and explained answers

The period ratio stays near two but both unwrapped critical angles make many turns. What can you conclude?

The period ratio alone does not demonstrate the two-angle libration seen in the temporary-capture example. Check sampling and periapse conditioning before classifying any more general resonant state; one circulating angle does not rule out every possible resonance.

A no-disk energy test passes but an external-force test drifts. What additional balance is missing?

Integrate disk work using inertial velocities and torque using inertial positions, then subtract them from the full system changes. The disk is not part of the conserved three-body energy. A heliocentric single-planet audit is insufficient.
