# From magnetic stress to reconnection

Sandbox Physics · 2026-11-03

A stressed magnetic field can move the surrounding gas. Begin with that physical picture, follow flux and energy through a small fluid calculation, then open a real X-ray file and the primary papers on thin sheets and electrons.

## A physical picture, then a calculation

[1 · L1 Where a solar flare finds its energy A magnetic field can store energy and push plasma into motion. Follow the release, from a thin current layer to measured X-ray brightening.](https://sandboxphysics.com/stories/solar-magnetic-reconnection/where-the-flare-finds-energy/) [2 · L1 When magnetic flux follows the fluid Derive flux freezing with a moving loop. Define the magnetic potential, distinguish resistivity from diffusivity, and test the ideal limit.](https://sandboxphysics.com/stories/solar-magnetic-reconnection/when-flux-follows-the-fluid/) [3 · L2 How a thin current sheet sets the pace Derive the Sweet–Parker estimate from mass flow and electric-field balance. Keep sheet length, viscosity and instability growth distinct.](https://sandboxphysics.com/stories/solar-magnetic-reconnection/how-a-sheet-sets-the-pace/) [4 · L3 Follow energy through a reconnection calculation Derive the coupled MHD energy transfer and reproduce a conservative calculation that still changes ideal null flux incorrectly.](https://sandboxphysics.com/stories/solar-magnetic-reconnection/follow-the-converted-energy/) [5 · L3 Recompute a flare from one GOES file Read a fixed NOAA file, decode UTC and quality flags, and reproduce two X-ray peaks and conditional band fluence.](https://sandboxphysics.com/stories/solar-magnetic-reconnection/one-goes-file-one-flare/) [6 · L4 Where the fluid picture of reconnection runs out Read thin-sheet growth, resolved island merger and MMS electron-scale measurements with their own equations, axes and limits.](https://sandboxphysics.com/stories/solar-magnetic-reconnection/where-the-fluid-picture-runs-out/)

## Run the independent science

The small package contains independent Python, the exact NOAA input, our synthetic MHD states and source/units/failure notes. The pinned dependencies are listed before the offline commands.
