# Frequency combs: measuring where the ruler starts

Sandbox Physics · 2026-10-22

Why is a known pulse repetition rate insufficient to identify an absolute optical frequency?

1. Mode-locked pulse train
2. Repetition and offset measurements
3. Beat with an unknown laser
4. Referenced optical frequency

The beat is a measured radio-frequency difference. Selecting a mode number and beat sign requires additional information.

## Equal spacing does not locate a tooth

A stable mode-locked pulse train has an optical spectrum with regularly spaced modes. Repetition rate determines the spacing; carrier-envelope phase slip adds a common frequency offset. Knowing spacing alone leaves every tooth free to shift together.

The comb relation below assigns an integer mode number, a repetition frequency and an offset frequency. All frequencies use the same reference timebase. A plot with evenly drawn peaks is not yet a calibrated frequency ruler.

\nu_n=n f_{\mathrm{rep}}+f_{\mathrm{ceo}}
$$

## Self-reference measures the offset

If a coherent comb spans an octave, double a low-frequency tooth and compare it with a tooth at twice its mode number. Their difference isolates the offset. The procedure needs suitable spectral broadening and a detectable coherent beat, not merely a broad intensity envelope.

NIST’s account describes the Hall/JILA team, Hänsch’s work and the role of octave-spanning fibre broadening. It also reports comparisons of independent comb systems. Reproducibility across systems tested the measuring method beyond a single attractive spectrum.

$$
2\nu_n-\nu_{2n}=f_{\mathrm{ceo}}
$$

## The unknown laser contributes one more beat

Overlap the unknown laser with a nearby comb tooth on a photodetector. The beat gives the magnitude of their frequency difference. A coarse wavelength measurement identifies the tooth neighborhood; changing a known setting or using additional information resolves the sign.

A cycle slip, incorrect mode number or bad reference clock can produce a precise-looking wrong answer. Offset locking and repetition locking therefore do not eliminate the need to validate the complete counting chain.

## A comb transfers a reference; it does not create one

A comb can compare optical clocks, connect optical and microwave frequencies, and measure frequency ratios. Accuracy ultimately depends on reference realization, stabilization and systematic corrections in the device being compared.

The 2005 Hall–Hänsch contribution includes precision laser spectroscopy and frequency-comb techniques. Do not collapse the broader metrology program into a claim that either scientist invented every component of the final instrument.

## Break one link in the frequency chain

In the linked model, hold repetition rate fixed and change offset, then compare the beat record. Finally alter the mode assignment. These operations distinguish stable spacing, absolute calibration and correct identification, which are separate requirements.

## Explore the related models

Each link states what the existing model can explain and where the historical measurement goes further.
