# Dirac or Majorana: is the neutrino its own antiparticle?

Whether a neutrino is its own antiparticle ties into helicity, phases that cancel in oscillations, and searches for lepton-number violation. A double-beta signal is one thing; the neutrino mass read from it depends on a model.

## Zero charge raises the question but does not answer it

A charged particle and its antiparticle have opposite charges, so charge tells them apart. A neutrino is neutral, so charge cannot settle whether it differs from its antiparticle. Neutrality allows a Majorana mass, but many neutral particles still have distinct antiparticles, told apart by other quantum numbers.

For a Dirac neutrino, each mass state and its charge-conjugate partner are different particles; in the simplest description that conserves lepton number, they carry opposite lepton number. A Majorana mass state is its own antiparticle, and its mass term violates lepton number by two units.

This is a statement about massive particle states. It does not mean a detector would see every electron-flavor event as the same. Flavor labels describe how the weak interaction produces and detects neutrinos; mass states describe how they travel. Keeping the two apart stops an identity in field theory from being mistaken for two reactions that look alike in an experiment.

## The weak interaction still tells the reactions apart

Even if the mass states are Majorana, reactor antineutrinos and solar neutrinos do not become interchangeable in experiments. When the energy is much larger than the mass, the weak interaction strongly favors different helicity components in the two reactions. The charged lepton produced still helps tell the reactions apart.

Helicity is the direction of spin relative to motion; chirality labels components of a field. The two coincide for a massless particle but differ for a massive one. The wrong-helicity component is suppressed by the mass, so it does not make an ordinary detector equally efficient for both reactions.

The practical problem is that ordinary weak-interaction measurements of neutrinos moving very close to light speed can give almost the same results in the Dirac and Majorana pictures. A decisive test needs a process that is sensitive to lepton-number violation or to some other interaction that differs between the two; neutrality alone cannot decide.

Finding nothing would not prove that neutrinos are Dirac particles, and a double-beta signal alone would not reveal which exchange mechanism dominates.

## Ordinary oscillations cannot see the Majorana phases

An oscillation probability links the flavor at production to the flavor at detection, with the mass states propagating in between. An extra phase multiplying one column of the mixing matrix appears once at production and once, complex-conjugated, at detection. It therefore cancels from the ordinary amplitude, which conserves lepton number.

The Dirac CP phase can still affect oscillation interference. The extra phases allowed for Majorana neutrinos are separate parameters and do not enter that measurement. So even a successful CP-violation experiment would not tell Dirac from Majorana mass.

Likewise, in the standard interpretation, flavor change shows that the mass states have different masses, but not which type of mass term they have. KATRIN’s beta spectrum measures an incoherent combination of masses and carries no phase information either. These strong results still leave the question open.

## A double-beta decay with no neutrinos

Ordinary double-beta decay emits two electrons and two antineutrinos. In the neutrinoless mode, the two electrons carry the decay energy and no neutrinos come out. That changes lepton number by two units, so a convincing signal would test physics beyond any description that conserves lepton number.

If exchange of the known light Majorana neutrinos dominates, the amplitude contains a coherent effective mass. The mixing coefficients are squared, phases included, before they are summed, so the terms can cancel. Beta spectroscopy instead adds squared masses with positive weights.

Getting a mass from a half-life also depends on nuclear matrix elements and phase space, and other mechanisms that violate lepton number could contribute. Turning a peak into a precise neutrino mass takes more than identifying the isotope and counting two-electron events.

$$
m_{\beta\beta}=\left|\sum_i U_{ei}^{2}m_i\right|
$$

The effective mass when neutrinoless double-beta decay is read as exchange of light Majorana neutrinos. Other mechanisms that violate lepton number would need a different description.

## What a null result and a signal can each tell us

This article assumes no established neutrinoless double-beta signal. The complete KamLAND-Zen 800 analysis found no signal; combined with the earlier phase, it set a lower limit on the xenon-136 half-life of 3.8 times ten to the twenty-six years at 90 percent confidence. That limit holds for its data and statistical method.

Finding nothing does not prove that neutrinos are Dirac particles. A light-Majorana contribution could sit below the sensitivity because of the mass scale, the phases or the nuclear response. Ruling out one region of parameters is much narrower than ruling out every Majorana scenario.

In the other direction, the black-box argument links a double-beta process that violates lepton number to an induced Majorana mass term, under standard gauge-theory assumptions. It does not guarantee that light-neutrino exchange dominates the observed rate. A discovery would settle an important question about symmetry and start a search for the mechanism behind it.

## What we learned

Being neutral and oscillating does not make a neutrino a Majorana particle. A neutrinoless double-beta signal would probe lepton-number violation; a search that finds nothing rules out only the region it was sensitive to. Any mass read from a signal depends on the decay mechanism.
