# Haldane’s spin chains: integer and half-integer spins parted ways

Why did changing the spin quantum number alter the low-energy behavior of an antiferromagnetic chain?

Nobel contribution: 2016-1

1. Specify a one-dimensional antiferromagnet
2. Distinguish integer and half-integer spins
3. Predict the long-chain excitation gap
4. Compare numerical and material tests

The prediction concerns a specified quantum spin model in the long-chain limit. Finite chains, anisotropy and interchain coupling need separate checks.

## The 1983 distinction was unexpected

Haldane showed that the low-energy description of an antiferromagnetic chain distinguishes integer from half-integer spin. For the ideal isotropic nearest-neighbor chain, integer spin can support a gapped state, unlike the familiar gapless half-integer case.

The distinction required quantum phase information absent from a simple classical arrow chain. Subsequent numerical work and quasi-one-dimensional magnetic materials tested the prediction.

## The gap must survive increasing system size

Any finite chain has a discrete spectrum. To infer a bulk gap, the lowest excitation must be studied as chain length grows and boundary effects are separated. An oscillation frequency in one small simulation is therefore not the thermodynamic Haldane gap.

## Material comparisons require the Hamiltonian

Real chains can have exchange anisotropy, single-ion effects, impurities and coupling between chains. Spectroscopy and susceptibility constrain those terms. Agreement with the ideal prediction is meaningful only after establishing that the material approximates the intended model.

## The spin-chain and band models remain distinct

The existing spin-chain Lab explores finite quantum dynamics. The Chern-insulator Lab illustrates a separate topological contribution associated with Haldane’s later work. Their reuse supplies useful context without claiming that a single-particle band model reproduces an interacting integer-spin chain.

### [Quantum spin dynamics](https://sandboxphysics.com/labs/quantum-spin-chain-quench/)

Follow correlations after changing a spin-chain Hamiltonian.

A finite dynamical chain does not by itself establish the thermodynamic Haldane gap or a measured ferrite structure.

### [Chern insulator](https://sandboxphysics.com/labs/chern-insulator/)

Change a band mass and inspect the gap and topological response.

The band model explains an integer invariant; it has no fractional Hall quasiparticles.
